In the wake of a devastating earthquake that rocked Morocco, I had the privilege of representing the Leticia and Eduardo Azar Foundation on a mission to assist Chabad of Morocco, whom together with the Council of Jewish Communities of Morocco, are at the forefront of coordinating aid for the earthquake victims. Our focus was clear: to provide assistance to those living in the historic Jewish quarter of Morocco.

As we embarked on this mission, the words of Mr. Gille Berdugo, the son of Mr. Serge Berdugo President of the Jewish communities of Morocco, echoed in our hearts. He remarked, “Moroccans are resilient, modest, and have a strong belief in God, which will certainly help them in the recovery.” These words became a source of inspiration for our efforts.

Rabbi Levi Banon, the Chabad emissary to Morocco, stands as a beacon of hope and gratitude amid the chaos and devastation. He offered heartfelt thanks to the Leticia and Eduardo Azar Foundation for their unwavering support and for showing up on the ground when it mattered most.

The undertaking is not just about helping our fellow Jews but also extending a helping hand to the thousands of non-Jewish residents who had made the Jewish quarter their home. These resilient individuals were now displaced, finding refuge in school gyms and other facilities on the outskirts of Marrakesh.

Witnessing the arrival of busloads of displaced families was an emotional experience. Men, women, and children arrived with their entire lives condensed into small bags, while some had even less. The resilience they displayed was nothing short of remarkable.

Our mission was twofold: to provide practical assistance and to offer emotional support. We endeavored to lift their spirits with kind words and warm smiles. The aid we provided came in the form of food, toiletries, candies, and toys – small tokens of comfort amidst their hardship.

Beyond the immediate relief efforts, we also assessed the damage inflicted upon the historic Jewish quarter, including the synagogue and cemetery. Walking through the streets and meeting with some of the victims in their homes, our hearts were heavy with the realization that these people, who had once called this place home, were forced to pack up their lives and leave behind cherished memories.

The resilience and spirit of the earthquake survivors were a testament to the human capacity to overcome adversity. While the earthquake brought destruction and upheaval, it also brought out the best in people as they rallied together to provide aid and support.

The impact of our support was deeply moving. The expressions of gratitude and hope we witnessed among the earthquake survivors were powerful. They felt not only the practical relief of the aid but also the emotional support from a caring community. It was evident that our presence and assistance had made a significant difference in their lives during this challenging time.

As I reflect on this journey of compassion, I am reminded of the power of unity, community, and the unwavering human spirit. While the road to recovery may be long, the bonds forged in the face of adversity are unbreakable. Together, we can rebuild not only the physical structures but also the lives and hopes of those affected by this natural disaster.

In representing the Leticia and Eduardo Azar Foundation, I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to have been part of this mission to Morocco. It serves as a poignant reminder that, as the Lubavitcher Rebbe taught us, acts of goodness and kindness have the remarkable power to dispel even the darkest of shadows and bring light and hope to those who need it most.
